West Virginia University’s Mining Extension program, housed in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources is your trusted partner in mine training.  The program works cooperatively with state and federal agencies, academic departments at WVU, and mining companies in both West Virginia and around the country.   

The centerpiece of the program is the Academy for Mine Training and Energy Technologies.  Located on land donated to the University by Consol Energy.  The centerpiece of the Academy is the simulated underground mine lab.  The West Virginia University Mining Extension has a National Fire Protection Association-compliant burn room.  This burn room is used extensively for mine rescue, basic fire brigade, and advanced fire brigade training.

Academy instructors have been recognized as leaders in providing high-quality mine health and safety training with an enhanced focus in each session toward “the betterment of the individual miner.”

Training is also conducted at the Mine Simulation Laboratory at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley, W.V.  In the fiscal year 2016, over 3,300 miners were trained by the WVU Mining Extension program.
